Hobart is the capital of and the most populous city in Tasmania. It was founded as a penal colony and it is Australia's second oldest and eleventh largest city. Hobart has a population of close to 202,000 and is the home port for the Australian and French Antarctic operations. Hobart is located on the south-eastern coast of Tasmania and many of the city's visitors choose to start their Tasmanian journey in Hobart, then drive up north before taking the ferry over to Melbourne.
