Fremantle is located about 19 km SW of the Western Australian capital city Perth. It was settled by the Swan River colonist in 1829 and was declared a city in 1929. Fremantle was named after Charles Fremantle, the English naval officer who pronounced possession of Western Australia. The city has a population of close to 26,000. Fremantle is also the home of the AFL football team Fremantle Dockers, who have chosen their name based on Fremantle's rich fishing history.
