Clermont is a town 274 km west of Mackay in Queensland, Australia. It was established after gold was discovered in 1861. Clermont was named after Clermont in France and although gold was the reason people moved to Clermont in the mid 1800s, the discovery of copper ensured the survival of the town. In the 1880s, 4000 Chinese were living and mining in Clermont, but following racial riots the Chinese were removed from the region in 1888.
