Cairns is a regional city in Queensland. It was settled in 1876 and named after the former Governor of Queensland, William Wellington Cairns. Cairns developed into a major port and railhead, exporting sugar cane, gold and other precious metals from the surrounding areas. It still relies heavily on export, especially the export of sugar, but tourism is now providing the city with a significant income. Cairns enjoys a beautiful, tropical climate and is the perfect area to rent a car if you are thinking about driving down the east coast of Australia towards Melbourne.
