Brisbane is the largest, is the most populous city in Queensland. It is also the third largest city in Australia and located next to the Brisbane River, between Moreton bay and the Great Divinding Range. Brisbane was named in honour of Sir Thomas Brisbane who was the governor of New South Wales in the early 1800s and the city grew from a harsh penal colony he founded in 1824. The penal colony was moved to the location of Brisbane CBD in 1825. The city developed fairly slowly until after the WWII, when it played an important role as the headquarters for General Douglas MacArthur.
